What Are Varicoceles?
Varicoceles are enlarged veins that occur in the scrotum. They’re similar to varicose veins in the leg in that deoxygenated blood no longer flows back to the heart properly. Normally, one-way valves in the veins ensure that blood flows against gravity toward the heart. When these valves weaken and don’t work as they need to, it can cause blood to collect in the veins, enlarging them. This can cause a variety of negative effects, even impacting the function of the testicles such as sperm and hormone production. At South Florida Vascular Associates, we treat varicoceles with minimally invasive, outpatient procedures.
Symptoms and Risk Factors
One of the most notable symptoms of varicoceles is a dull ache or pain in the testicles or scrotum, which may improve when you lie down. It can also be accompanied by swelling or the feeling of a small lump – however, some varicoceles are tiny and can’t be seen or felt. In more severe cases, varicoceles can impede fertility and the health of your testicles, leading to a reduction in testosterone and sperm count.
Varicoceles occur when the veins in your testicles don’t return blood to the heart properly. It’s unknown exactly what causes this to happen in the testicles. Varicoceles can happen at any age, but are more common during puberty, possibly because of the increased blood flow to the testicles during this time. It’s thought that many men are born with varicoceles but only some develop symptoms throughout their lifetime – many men have varicoceles but don’t know it.
How Are Varicoceles Diagnosed?
Varicoceles are sometimes discovered when seeking help for fertility problems. Other times, they may be diagnosed directly because of symptoms like pain. An ultrasound is often the best way to achieve a detailed view of the veins in the area. Once we locate the varicocele, we can begin to develop a treatment plan.
Varicocele Treatment Options
Traditional varicocele surgery is very unappealing for most patients. It can require significant recovery time due to the delicate nature of the scrotum, also including sutures and incisions. Finally, it can also come with risks like fluid buildup or infection, causing significant pain and further health concerns.
Varicocele embolization is one of our most recommended options for treatment. This groundbreaking, minimally-invasive, outpatient procedure can be performed without general anesthesia in our spa-like surgical facility, meaning you don’t need to go to the hospital. During the procedure, a tiny opening is made in the skin through which a catheter is inserted. Using X-ray imaging, it’s guided to the affected area where it closes off the vein, rerouting blood flow through healthy vessels. Once complete, you can immediately return to moderate daily activities. At South Florida Vascular Associates, we can help you achieve relief from varicoceles without the hassle of surgery and a hospital setting.
